North Monterey County High School, located in the Monterey Bay area of central coastal California, is seeking a new wrestling coach. The high school, built in 1977, is in the process of refurbishing the gym, a brand new Jr. High school is under construction adjacent to the high school, and a wrestling room will be built for that program. Our state tournament is not divided, all athletes go through sectionals to make it through, top 8 place in a 32 man bracket at the State meet (it's a pretty tough nut to crack). Our school has only had 5 place winners in it's short history, the standout would be Paul Gomez who lost to Steven Abas in the 112 final in '95. He went on to Lassen, won a national title in his first year and was picked up by Nebraska and finished All-American there. Our area is actually "North" Monterey County, mainly agriculture, which has a lot of second and third generation working class blue collar families and a lot of Hispanic farm labor, both provide a great pool of very tough kids with a lot of potential. We host a two day tournament in January(15 years running) that completely funds the entire program, no need for fundraisers. We have 5 mats here, the tournament requires 8, and we are hoping to add a couple more to our inventory. We had Tony Davis out here for a visit and he really liked everything he saw, but since he was still competing he opted for a college program to help with his training. We are about 1 hr. from Stanford University and about 2 hrs. from Fresno State and Cal Poly.
